June 26, 2008. The river is now down to 1650cfs at the present time, and is being ramped down from a high of 4200cfs released from the dam to simulate the annual spring flows for the benefit of the endangered fish species. These flows are designed to imitate the annual spring flows prior to construction of the dam. The high flows have
not hampered the fishing much, as the flows are "ramped" up
and down gradually to not spook the fish. The ramping down should be completed
this week, and the river returned to the basement flows of 850cfs for
the rest of the summer. Nymphing has been very good with small baetis imitations; WD40s, RS2s, PT and midges. San Juan worms always seem to work well during the higher flows, as do Glow Bugs. Of course, the fish are looking for Cicadas this time of year, and reports show all types of Cicadas imitations are taking fish. A favorite is a Crystal Cicadas, especially on bright, summy days. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT
FEW WEEKS AHEAD- RATED 4.0 - 5.0 This week's "Hot Six Flies": The flies mentioned below suggest the available trout food and their imitations. Each week I will list the top six flies that were productive from the week before. The danger here is that things change from week to week, so while trends in fly selection can be consistent, keep in mind they do also change with current fishing conditions.
