Activities

Everything from Horseback Riding to Napping

At Red Canyon Lodge, we offer a wide range of activities for kids, seniors and everyone in-between. Enjoy everything from horseback riding to boating in our peaceful lakes. Or if you're looking to relax, we promise to find a nice quiet spot in the shade for a little afternoon nap for you.

You can spend all week here and never leave the lodge grounds, but just in case you are in the mood to wander, we are located right next to one of the West's premier outdoor playgrounds. The Flaming Gorge Reservoir, high Uinta Mountains and the mighty Green River are just around the corner, promising a full day of boating, rafting, hiking, biking and fishing.

Red Canyon Lodge offers a variety of boats and mountain bikes for rent. If you have any other recreation gear needs while you are visiting Flaming Gorge Country, just ask our staff at the front desk. They will be happy to make arrangements for you.

Visit our FAQs page for information about distances and area road conditions.

Horseback RidingEveryone is welcome at Red Canyon Stables. It is a perfect way to experience the beauty and wildlife of the surrounding National Forest.

Our wranglers offer a wide range of horseback riding adventures. Choose from stable rides for the littlest ones to hourly, two-hour, half-day and overnight trips. We also offer private instruction. Click here to view our Trail Ride Flyer.

Red Canyon Stables are open daily from Memorial Day to mid-September (as long as Mother Nature cooperates!).

Stable rides are the perfect horseback experience for those children who are not quite ready to handle a horse on the longer trail rides. This short, gentle ride is hand-guided by our experienced wranglers. At the end, you will receive a picture of your little buckaroo - a lasting memory of their first ride on a horse!

Private Lake FishingOur private lakes offer serenity and plenty of big fish. Escape the crowds while fishing on our well-stocked East Greens Lake. Trophy trout are waiting right outside your cabin door. It's a perfect place to unwind or practice that cast. East Greens Lake (rainbow trout) and West Greens Lake (brook trout) are available to all overnight guests and daily visitors.

In 2003, we installed a fully accessible fishing pier on West Greens Lake to compliment its existing nature trail and picnic sites. And while you don't need a state fishing license for our fishing, you do need a private Red Canyon Lodge Permit. When you're ready to go, just check in with us regarding fees and our strict catch and release regulations.

Kids StuffTake the kids to an outdoor wonderland. Never again will you have to fight boredom on your family vacation. There is so much for children to do and see at Red Canyon Lodge that you may have to "tether" the kids to your wrist to keep from losing them!

Every kid should grow up with a favorite fishing hole. Give your kids the one that is right in front of our restaurant. Finish your meal in peace on our outside patio as you watch your child angle for feisty rainbow trout and the odd duck just a few feet away. Made especially for children up to 12 years old, it is the perfect introduction into the wonderful world of angling. It's also a great place for the seasoned youngster to land the big one.

Of course, most kids are so excited by feeding the ducks that they forget all about the free fishing! And if that doesn't grab them, how about a cruise around the lake in one of our rental paddleboats or canoes? That is, if you can fit it in after riding horses for the day.

Note: The Kids Fishing Pond is re-stocked every Spring and is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Boat RentalsWe've always felt that the best way to enjoy our private lakes is to float out in the middle of them. Red Canyon Lodge carries a variety of rental boats to help you achieve that goal. Pick from our little navy of sturdy rowboats, sleek canoes or fun paddleboats that rent by the hour or all day.

We also have a few float-tubes hanging around for more serious fishing guests. With rates as low as $8 per hour, it's hard to resist.

Of course, we hope you don't mind sharing the lake with the locals...the osprey, the moose and the mule deer that call it home!

Hiking

While you are here, spend an hour or the day getting out on some of the great hiking trails in the area. Would you believe that one of the most scenic trails starts right outside your cabin door? The Red Canyon Rim Trail is an easy walk to scenic overlooks and a US Forest Service Visitor Center. Other trails in Flaming Gorge range from a spectacular river walk to high alpine adventures.

Free trail maps are available at the Lodge, or you can click here for detailed descriptions and trail maps for excursions that range from easy to advanced. And make sure you pack your camera, because stunning scenic views and abundant wildlife await you around every corner!

Mountain BikingRed Canyon Lodge is surrounded by superb mountain biking terrain. In fact, our most scenic trail starts right out your cabin door! Trails are available for all experience and fitness levels, and all are surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Grab a free trail map, rent one of our cushy Cannondale full-suspension mountain bikes and we'll catch you at dinnertime. And should you decide to turn your rock hopping into a picnic – we'll make a delicious box lunch for you.

Mountain Bikes rent for $10/hour, $20/half day and $35/full day.

You can click here for detailed trail descriptions and maps in the Flaming Gorge area.
